Guidelines for Walkers
Thank you for
participating in the 2007 Walk. We had a
great event last year and hope this year’s walk will be even better.
Ø Safety for our walkers is our first
concern. Please stay on sidewalks or
road shoulders at all times. We will
provide a lead vehicle and rear vehicle for the walk. Flashers will be used by
the vehicles at all times. A third
vehicle will serve as a “runner” vehicle.
This vehicle will transport walkers to and from the walk route to rest
areas or return to the walker’s starting point.
Ø We always want at least two walkers
together at all times.
Important
Note: We ask that children under the age of twelve
(12)
not participate in the walk on the highway
route. Children under the age of twelve
(12) can walk city routes if there are sidewalks. Children must be accompanied by an
adult. We are asking that children under
the age of six (6) not participate in the walk portion of the event as
their enthusiasm/excitement can often cause real safety concerns. We do want to invite children of
all ages to participate in the rally events.
Parents are responsible for the safety of their children at all
times.
Ø We will also try to assign a walkie-talkie
to one of the walkers in the group to assist in communicating with
drivers. However, there may be times
that there may be distance between walkers or the walkie-talkie may not work. If you need something to drink, to take a
break, use restroom facilities and/or to end your participation in the walk
just let the person with the walkie-talkie know or wave at the closest vehicle
and we will assist you.
Ø Please pace yourself and know your
limits. Be aware of heat exhaustion. Don’t be embarrassed to call for a
break. We have assigned back-up walkers
in the vehicles that can take your place while you take a break.
Ø We have first aid kits, insect repellant,
sunscreen, water, sport drinks and snacks/fruit in the vehicles for you if you
need them.
Ø In case of rain, the walk will continue
unless the storm includes lightning, and we will temporarily suspend the walk
for that time. We encourage you to bring
rain gear (poncho, raincoat, umbrella) if the weather calls for rain. You can store the gear in one of the vehicles
until needed.
Ø We have alerted city and county emergency
units as to the schedule and route of the walk.
We appreciate you
taking the time to support our public awareness campaign. Be assured that your safety and security is
our first concern.
Again, thank
you for your involvement and support!
Sincerely,
