ABOUT MVCAA

Missouri Valley Community Action Agency (MVCAA) was founded in 1965. Its mission is to engage communities and focus resources to end poverty.

MVCAA is one of 19 Community Action Agencies located in Missouri, and one of over 900 in the United States . Community Action Agencies were established by the Economic Opportunity Act of 1964, a major piece of the "Great Society" legislative agenda of the Lyndon Johnson administration. The function of every Community Action Agency is to combat poverty in geographically designated areas. Each Agency is unique, because each is designed to address local needs.

Like its sister organizations, MVCAA is a locally controlled, private, nonprofit, 501(c)(3) charitable organization whose purpose is to sponsor and operate community action programs designed to help local residents become more self-sufficient. A local Board of Directors oversees MVCAA’s Leadership Team and its staff of 153 to ensure that the organization runs smoothly.

Over the past 40 years MVCAA’s service area has grown to include Ray, Carroll, Chariton, Lafayette, Saline, Johnson, and Pettis Counties. Corporate offices were originally established in Carrollton, Missouri (1965), and later relocated to Corder, Missouri (1971). In 1985 MVCAA purchased property in Marshall, Missouri , the site of its current headquarters.

Guided by the Community Action Promise, we began over 40 years ago with a $50,000 grant to operate three centers offering services to about 60 children. MVCAA now administers a budget of about $9.7 million, and offers combined services annually to over 8,000 children, youth, and adults at 19 sites within our seven county area.
