The primary goal of this year’s event will be to focus attention on the need for changes in public policy in order to provide continuing resources to families as they transition from public support systems to economic self-sufficiency.

Learning from our first walk in 2006, we have made several changes to the event.  Due to safety concerns for our walkers, we have cut approximately 10 miles off the original route along Highway 13.  Also, we are going to reverse the route of the walk and begin in Marshall on Monday, September 17th.  The now five-day event will conclude in Keytesville on Friday, September 21st.

Why do this? Back to the top

We call for an end to poverty in our communities.  Citizens must come together to protect our homes, lend strength and support in times of struggle and hardship, and to build a national political dialogue.  We must discuss our collective responsibility for human dignity, equity, and well-being.  It is time to bring a focus and energy to ending the tragedy of poverty in our communities.

Our communities have incredible potential for a high quality of life, for creating meaningful work, and for building common bonds.  However, this potential cannot be realized while there are still people who live in poverty.  With the elimination of poverty, everyone will be better off: we will have healthier, stronger and safer communities.

2006 Ending Poverty – One Step at a Time Event

For six days in June 2006, 205 walkers took to the highways of west central Missouri with the goal of focusing attention on the needs of over 20,000 individuals that live in poverty in our communities.  Those volunteers, which included MVCAA staff, program participants and their families, community partners, representatives of faith-based groups and elected officials walked for a total of 1,481 miles over a 180-mile route through Chariton, Carroll, Ray, Lafayette, Johnson, Pettis and Saline counties. The event included rallies in nine communities along the way,

A Call for Action was issued by MVCAA in hopes of gaining the commitment of community partners, leaders and citizens to end poverty in our area.  As a result of the event, significant media attention was given to the walk and its message and new partnerships were created.

There are many ways to help make

the 2007 event a success!

How can you get involved?

For a successful event, we need community support for:

Volunteers for country planning teams

Walkers

Drivers

Volunteers for Rest Areas

Rally Speakers

Community Partners

    and . . . . . . . . . . . .

Please consider making a difference in your community by offering your gift of support.  This event helps to increase the awareness and understanding of families living in poverty.  The majority of these families work hard—and play by the rules—and still remain in poverty.  MVCAA is a not-for-profit organization and your gift may be tax-deductible as allowable by law.  Donors are recognized on the event t-shirt and other print media.
